A bit of a comment. My mother had breast cancer which eventually started showing up in small tumors in the brain. I get a call from my Dad that she is in the hospital and is crazy. I fly out, push the hospital to get an MRI. They find a small tumor blocking the "drain". They removed it and she went back to normal in a few days.

Possibly more of a fluid pressure issue, but hard to tell. My point being that drain places a large role in keeping the brain functioning normally - this was a rather striking example

yes, that's a striking example, Thanks for sharing and glad she is back to normal!

Dr. Topol

Truly very interesting & yes the metaphors & analogies were spot-on.

Great follow up to your earlier post that gave an overview of the glymphatic system.

Fascinating I told my sixteen year old grandson, I’d like to be teaching high school now and induce kids to understand changes in medical knowledge, as well as my 85 year old neurologist. All of us should be excited was great to learn about glymphatics, but now a higher level

I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease a year ago at the age of 67. For several months I had noticed tremors in my right hand and the shaking of my right foot when I was sitting. My normally beautiful cursive writing was now small, cramped printing. And I tended to lose my balance. The neurologist had me walk down the hall and said I didn't swing my right arm. I had never noticed! I was in denial for a while, as there is no history in my family of parents and five older siblings, but I had to accept I had classic symptoms. I was taking amantadine and carbidopa/levodopa and was about to start physical therapy to strengthen muscles. I used different supplements that didn't work, so last July, I tried the PD-5 protocol—the best decision ever! My tremors eased, my energy returned, and I sleep soundly. I feel like a new woman, and I can walk and exercise again.  I got the PD-5 from ww w. limitlesshealthcenter. com

How would a meningioma located at the top of the head (smaller than a quarter) affect the process of drainage?

Thank you

Eric Topol's avatar

no likely to affect substantially, but you can check with Prof Kipnis kipnis@wustl.edu

Fascinating. I wrote papers as a student with Helen Cserr about this topic back in the '70s and a Master's thesis that predicted much of the new findings, but, of course, no one reads Master's theses, not much even Doctoral theses. Then I went off into other research directions, and Helen died early not long after. Not claiming precedent or complaining, of course not; I'm just so glad to see the advances described over the last few years and summarized here.
